Travel Consultation Information

People are choosing to travel to all sorts of exotic places these days. Lower costs and faster transport make it more feasible for people to visit far away places and to undertake various adventure trips. Unfortunately, there are health risks involved with travel to these exotic places that we tend to take for granted. Due to the diversity of travel nowadays the travel consultation has become more complex and requires a lot of detailed information about your itinerary including any significant aspects of your health both past and present.

Based on the information that you provide us with, we will perform a risk assessment to decide which vaccines and drugs will best meet your needs.  For this reason your appointment may take up to 30 minutes.  We will try to give you the vaccinations you require during your visit to avoid making any unnecessary future appointments; however some may have to be given at a later date, especially if a course is required.

Injections these days are nothing to worry or panic about, all vaccinations we give are small and generally will not be felt at all, or will cause little stinging sensation at the least.  If you are nervous, we will try our utmost best to calm your nerves and will offer you the option to lie down, take your time and we'll make you a cup of tea or coffee!

It would help us greatly if, before your appointment, you had some awareness of the travel health problems that you may be at risk from on your trip. If you have the internet at your disposal, please visit:

Here you will find some relevant material regarding you destination, at your liberty to read and print-off (which we highly recommend you do so).  We look foward to seeing you and helping you to travel safely, and at ease.

At your travel consultation, some of the typical questions you will be asked are:

When are you departing and for how long? Vaccines normally take up to 3 weeks for immunity to develop. Accelerated programmes can be achieved but generally at least 4 weeks is needed before departure.

Where, precisely, are you travelling?

Cruising and Backpacking encompasses a variety of countries all with very different travel health requirements.  We need to know about altitudes, monsoons and rural environments.

Are you planning or undertaking any high risk activities?

Have you taken out travel insurance and have you informed them of any medical problems?

Is there a possibility you could be pregnant?

This may affect the vaccines and drugs you can have.

Do you have any medical conditions?

This may also affect which vaccines you can have safely.

Have you had any reaction to any immunisations or drugs in the past?

Allergies and past reactions alert us to potential adverse reactions that we can explain to you.

What mediation are you currently taking?

We can advise on how to continue to take these safely whilst abroad and advise you on which malaria tablets will be safer for you.
